Don't dump hot condensate, return it to the boiler

💧 Condensate at 180 °F still holds about 11% of the steam's energy, according to a US DOE example
Should hot condensate leaving a steam system go down the drain, or back to the boiler?
The US Department of Energy (DOE) Steam Tip Sheet #8 states that returning condensate reduces the amount of makeup water needed, saving fuel, water and chemicals, and also cuts the amount of water discharged to drain. The example in the sheet calculates that, with condensate at 180 °F, steam at 100 psig and makeup water at 55 °F, the condensate still holds about 11% of the steam's energy. This figure applies only to the conditions in that example; if your plant or hotel system differs, the value will differ too. DOE's guidance is that if you don't yet have a condensate return system, you should assess the cost and install one if it is cost-effective.
