💧 Many people assume blood stains need hot water, but the guidance says to start with cold water

Should blood, egg and milk stains on sheets and towels be treated with hot water or cold water first?

The answer is cold. Laundry guidance from US universities states that heat sets stains, and that protein stains such as blood, egg and milk should be soaked in cold water for about half an hour or longer and rubbed gently, then treated with detergent applied to the stain and rinsed out. If the stain is still there, the same guidance recommends soaking overnight, and warns against putting stained items in a dryer or ironer, because the heat may make the stain impossible to remove. For hotels and hospitals, separating stained linen and soaking it in cold water before it enters the wash line is a small step that helps reduce rewashes.
