Too much fabric softener makes towels less absorbent

💧 After drying an arm with a towel, 7.5% of the water stayed on the skin, but with fabric softener it was 21.2%
Does fabric softener really make towels less absorbent?
Yes. In a 2021 Japanese study, carried out by the laboratory of a fabric softener manufacturer, participants dried an arm that had 300 milliliters of water poured over it. Towels washed without softener left an average of 7.5% of the water on the skin, while towels treated with softener at 0.1% of fabric weight left 21.2%. The study used a small group of participants and a single type of towel, so the figures are the results of this study, not a standard for every laundry. K-State Research and Extension also states that fabric softener reduces towel absorbency if overused. So use fabric softener sparingly on towels, and follow the machine manual for dosage.
