Check how hard your water is first for cleaner washes

💧 Water hardness comes in 4 levels. Which level is your laundry's water?
Before changing detergent brands or suspecting your washer, check your water. Under the US Geological Survey (USGS) classification, water falls into 4 levels by hardness (measured as calcium carbonate): soft 0-60 mg/L, moderately hard 61-120 mg/L, hard 121-180 mg/L and very hard above 180 mg/L. Harder water needs more soap or detergent to clean, and calcium and magnesium in the water can also leave whites gray, stiff and smelly. A 2011 US study testing household detergents found that powders needed roughly 10-15% to more than 30% more in hard water to match their results in soft water, while liquids performed no differently. For the right dosage for your machine, follow the machine manual and the chemical manufacturer's recommendations.
If whites look dull in a hard-water area, test the water before adding more detergent.
