Lowering wash temperature: what makes up for it

💧 Washing cooler to save energy: is a longer wash enough?

Not entirely. Wash results come from four factors working together: temperature, time, mechanical action from the drum, and chemistry. When you lower the temperature, the other factors can only partly make up for it. According to an academic review on textile hygiene (Microbial Cell 2019), extending the wash time alone cannot fully replace heat in reducing microorganisms. A detergent containing bleach compensates better, and the authors recommend washing at 60 degrees or above with bleach when hygienic cleanliness is needed, such as for hospital or hotel linen.

Before lowering the temperature, agree with your chemical supplier on which chemistry will replace the heat, and follow the machine manual.
