Iron in well water leaves orange stains on white linen

💧 Iron above 0.3 mg/L in water can leave orange stains on white linen
If your laundry uses well water, have you tested it for iron and manganese?
A publication from a US university recommends aesthetic water guidelines of no more than 0.3 mg/L iron and below 0.05 mg/L manganese, because iron can leave orange-brown stains on fabric, while manganese tends to leave dark black stains. Dissolved iron may be invisible when you turn on the tap, but it turns into orange-brown or black particles on contact with air, and it is common in well water. If your laundry uses well water, have it tested for iron and manganese and compare the results with these guidelines.
The publication was written for household wells in the US and the guidelines are aesthetic, not health-based, so use them as an initial guide only.
