Oily linen can still self-ignite after washing

🔥 Once linen is washed, the oil is no longer a worry. True?
Can spa towels or kitchen cloths that have been washed and dried really still catch fire on their own?
Yes. According to a report by Fire and Emergency New Zealand, massage oils and cooking oils on cotton fabric can build up heat until they ignite spontaneously, with no external heat source. The report also notes that cold-water washing or enzyme-based detergents may not fully remove oils and fats. In a case study in the report, a massage business washed and dried its towels, then folded and stored them while still hot; about 90 minutes later the towels burst into flames. The report recommends letting the dryer complete its full cycle, including the cool-down phase (follow the machine's manual), and spreading out oil-contaminated linen both before and after washing so the heat can dissipate.
