💡 Weigh linen before washing to cut water, chemical and energy waste per kilogram

Judging load size by eye easily leads to overloading or underloading, which affects how clean the linen gets, the life of the machine and the laundry's costs. Guidance from the US EPA and FEMP, along with the views of US laundry industry experts, recommends the following:

1. Only run full loads, and consider using a scale to weigh linen to the machine's rated capacity
2. Weigh clean, dry linen, because the machine's rated capacity refers to dry weight, and use a calibrated scale
3. Don't overload, because there is less room for the linen to tumble, it may not be wetted or cleaned evenly, and the motor, brakes and drum take more strain
4. Don't underload, because the linen is subjected to too much mechanical action and may pill or tear, and more water, chemicals, energy and labor are used per kilogram
5. Check the dry-weight capacity of your model and follow the machine's manual

If you skip weighing, loads may end up over or under capacity, with the consequences described in points 3 and 4.
