🧺 At closing time every day, wipe the door gasket and leave the washer door open so moisture can evaporate
End-of-day washer care is a small job, but one industrial washer manufacturer's manual includes it in the daily checklist. Before closing, do the following:
1. Remove any foreign objects from the door gasket
2. Clean the automatic chemical dispenser compartment and its lid
3. Leave the machine door open so moisture can evaporate
4. After every cycle, remove the linen straight away and leave the door open as well
Why it matters: a 2019 study from a children's hospital in Germany found antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water left on the door gasket and in the detergent compartment of a household washing machine, even though the machine washed at 65 degrees Celsius every cycle. The researchers suggested that the gasket area is cooler and damp. (This was a single case involving a household machine; it did not measure how often this happens in industrial machines.)
The list above comes from a single manufacturer's manual. Each model may have a different list, so follow the manual for the machine you use.
