Mildew comes from humidity: store linen fully dry with good airflow

🌡️ Linen stored in a room above 65% humidity is at high risk of mildew
Why does freshly washed linen in storage start to smell musty or develop mildew spots?
According to the US National Park Service (NPS), mold on textiles grows best at temperatures above 24 °C and relative humidity above 65%, especially in still air. Cotton and linen are most at risk, and the stains often don't come out completely. NPS recommends storing textiles below 65% humidity with gentle air circulation. The US EPA states that mold cannot grow without moisture and recommends keeping rooms below 60%. What operators can do: store only linen that is completely dry, never store damp linen or put it in plastic bags, place a humidity meter in the linen room, keep the air moving, and keep shelves raised off the floor. If linen comes out of the dryer still damp, follow the machine's manual.
