🧺 Can newly bought colored items go straight into a wash with everything else?
According to Kansas State Research and Extension (USA), new colored items should be washed separately the first time, then tested for color bleed before being washed with other items. The GINETEX care-labelling brochure also says that washing separately the first time may be appropriate for new colored textiles.
Steps the documents recommend
1. Wash new colored items on their own the first time
2. On the second wash, put a small piece of white fabric in the rinse water, then compare it with an unused piece of white fabric
3. Or dampen an inside seam and blot it with white blotting paper
4. If color transfers to the white fabric, keep washing that item separately
Testing for color bleed before washing new items with others shows whether the item is still releasing dye, so you can decide whether it needs to stay in a separate wash.
